This also applies to pyrotechnics (fireworks). Please be reminded that only those aged 18 and over are eligible for a burn permit.

WARNING CONCERNING SERVICES OFFERED FOR THE SALE AND MAINTENANCE OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
The Shannon Fire Department wishes to warn the public about services offered to citizens for the sale and maintenance of fire extinguishers. Several businesses have reported visits from companies offering sales of fire extinguishers as well as refilling and maintenance contracts.
Here are some tips to protect you: beware of unidentified vehicles and solicitors without professional business cards etc. who require payment in cash without an invoice. If companies or individuals claim that insurance companies require a specific extinguisher, please note that only a Municipal By-Law can require the possession of a fire extinguisher for residential fire protection and there is no such By-Law in place in the City of Shannon. Please also note that the Canadian Insurance Bureau states that Insurance Companies have their own criteria on risk acceptance and therefore, in certain cases, your insurance can require you to have a fire extinguisher. In most cases, however, they do not.
If you have your fire extinguisher serviced, you should never pay before the work is carried out and you should always ensure that your own extinguisher is returned to you. Periodic inspections of fire extinguishers should include a check of the following:
o that access to the extinguisher is not obstructed and that the operating instructions are legible;
o that the seal and pin indicator are not broken or missing (pin up);
o that the pressure gauge needle is positioned in the green zone.
Extinguishers without a pressure gauge are disposable and therefore, not rechargeable. Most inspection and refill companies will not refill extinguishers with the valve body thread made of plastic since proper use is not guaranteed.
We recommend that you purchase of your fire extinguisher in a hardware store. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy a new one than to have an existing one recharged. The ABC class of fire extinguisher is the most appropriate for home use. Remember that it must be ULC certified.
